This is a photo of my father taken about 60 years ago when I was just a young boy he was wearing the Official B.P.A. Badge (Bookmakers Protection Association) which I have still retained and is advertising the fact on the satchel (hod) and on all our London – Brighton Pitches and boards….note how smart staff were in those days even the tic-tac man to the right of the photo wore a collar and tie. On a good win day dad used to pay the staff which included the ‘clerk the most important member £4 for the day (and he really had to earn his wages) He can just be seen writing behind the pitch and the outside men and tic-tac men £3-£4 (this was very good wages) they had to make their own way to the race-tracks some had to travel miles Newmarket, Doncaster etc.
